Free Infantry will keep running indefinitely

OP
I've had a few people now ask me what's the state of the server and who is paying for it. I think the earlier thread about the future of the game/who pays/etc has cast some doubts.

The server will keep running indefinitely. Both technical and financial aspects are taken care of.

I cover the monthly costs and regularly administer the server to make sure that there aren't any issues with people logging on or playing. I have been doing so for well over a year now.

A launcher update is on the way which should, hopefully for once and for all, fix the issues with people logging in and having to change their settings and other nonsense.

Q. What happens to USL seasons?

Ask Champ and USL organizer if they want to keep running them.

Q. Can I help out?

Should you wish to donate to either the USL website (Champ) or to the Game Server (myself), you may do so by clicking on the link below:

http://www.uslzone.com/usl/donate.php

Note that the monthly cost for the server is $116 USD, so you can decide what fraction of that you'd like to contribute. If you do contribute, you have my sincere thanks.

That is very generous of you Jovan, donating your time and money.. but can I ask (no disrespect), why? Would you keep doing it if only a dozen or so people were the only active community?

Free Infantry has, historically anyway, had an ebb and flow to the population. I've been with the project since 2003 and there were a few periods of lots of players (highest number was about 350), and many many periods of a fraction of what we currently have.

The "ownership" has traded hands many times in the past. I was a developer first and then an admin when Aaerox departed the project, but the source of "Who pays for this shit?" was always kept away from the admins.

A few years back we had an issue with this question, and I was tired of having to deal with people who aren't accountable and who aren't even in the community but whose presence was needed to get anything done. A lot of cloak and dagger bullshit that I had no patience for, really.

I decided to consolidate all the critical things needed to run the game: the server/database, the domains, and payments, under myself. As the oldest member of the community it's unlikely that I'll leave and I don't see myself power tripping anytime soon so the servers are taken care of, and people can play without worry that they'll be permabanned or the server goes down or someone decides to direct their ire upon the whole community. Yes, these things happened before several times and they led to the collapse of community. It took a long time to rebuild what we have now.

So in closing, the server is taken care of to ensure that past problems don't plague the community, and I'm okay with doing this. I don't mind doing this if only a few of people play seldom (although at that point I may scale back and host it on my own machine :p).

Aside: the game last night had about 50 people, and I think there are more than that in total, although not a whole lot. I'm quite glad that many people find the time to show up and play.
