USL Live Top 5 - Week 1
5. Apollo - Coming out of retirement like he never left at all, Apollo was a late addition to a Suicide Squad roster that needed marine support. And he showed up to dole it out in spades. Apollo went 5-2 against D-Generation X, which was no small feat in a 30-27 loss in that match. And while he went 5-6 against Crusaders, his pushes and resiliency on offense were absolutely pivotal to the incredible comeback we witnessed tonight. I'm told by SV that he also contributed a good amount to being vocal on discord with his squad, and the results indicate that Apollo is going to be a big part of the future of this Suicide Squad roster.
4. Somera - When is it going to be Danny's year! Yosh asks this question every season, as Danny always looks poised to make that jump from a good to a great marine. In Week 1 matches Danny once again announced himself as a player to watch for Season 24 going 10-3 against CATS in a fantastic back-and-forth battle that saw NWO emerge victorious in the end, besting the USL Power Rankings and launching them into first place in this league. NWO has all the personnel to make a run at the golden goblet for Season 24, and they are going to need several more performances like this week from Danny if they want to take home the Championship.
3. Ninj - Sammy isn't always the most active player in USL, but no one doubts his talent. Ninj can be laser accurate with his AR, and Week 1 saw him showcase exactly why he is respected as a top-tier marine even when he doesn't play regularly. Going against a tough CATS team, Ninj was a huge factor in the early lead that NWO took on CATS, and finished the game with 10-4 on the day. Like with somera, if NWO is going to have a shot at winning the championship this season it's going to take performances from individual players like tonight's game from Ninj. So the only question that remains is - how many games will Ninj show for?
2. Legacy - Although it was a mixed bag tonight for CATS, splitting their games to finish 1-1 on the season, Legacy in particular stood out as having a great night despite other negatives on his team. In the first game between CATS and Nexus Legacy finished 19-4 after 30 minutes of continuously laying waste to the competition. That proved to be the best individual performance from Week 1 for all squads. And while his second game may not have turned out exactly as he would've preferred, Legacy still had an outstanding performance against New World Order going 10-4 against a team that ultimately defeated his squad 51-33 in the final score. Legacy had an momentous comeback season in USL Season 23 and is looking to continue that trajectory into Season 24, acting as the irreplaceable X-Factor in this CATS lineup.
1. Oct - The young Octavian had an absolutely stellar Week 1 showing. He came out of the game against Nexus initially as a demo, saw that it wasn't working as well as he wanted it to and so he shifted to Ripper. That switch turned out to be the catalyst that turned a close game into a rout. Oct finished that game 15-6, but he wasn't done. Next he walked into the match with Suicide Squad with a plan to keep the good times rollin', and ended up putting down another 17-4 game. Even though his team lost match number two, Oct was this week's stand-out player by a country mile. Great play!
Honorable Mention: Universal Soldier 2k aka Bret the Hitman Hart - Uni put up 11-3 against Nexus followed by 7-4 against Suicide Squad. Some big laws from him led to battle opening kills that slanted the momentum in his team's favor. Backs and Octavian are going to need some of these players to step up and put in big performances, and you have to give props to a guy like Uni coming in Week 1 and playing like he did. Kudos and an Honorable Mention to you, Sir!
Honorable Mention: Shasta McNasta (hp=1) aka DMX - Probably should've had Shasta in my top 5 over Apollo, given the stats he put on the board this weekend, but I think Apollo's play was also really crucial to the squad taking the W. But Shasta put up 8-5 in the opening loss to D-Generation X, which is impressive enough, but then turned around and went 14-4 in that crazy comeback victory over Crusaders. One might say he was the reason for the comeback, as SV told us that his call to push in the south angle is was propelled them to get those last couple of kills that resulted in the 43-41 finish in that game. Shasta is typically in the 5th or 6th marine position with a team like Anything to Win, but he is looking like a kill leader on this Suicide Squad roster - a role that Mountain is surely pleased to see him fill. Great Games!
